The third of 7 Timeout Beach Volleyball Series 2018 events took place on Saturday at DTS Beach Arena, Windhoek. The Retirement Fund Solutions Winter Classic 2018 saw a massive turnout of over 100 athletes participate in 5 categories; 2-a-side Men’s, Ladies, Social, Youth and 4-a-side Mixed Social.

The 30 teams weren’t just playing to become the Retirement Fund Solutions Winter Classic 2018 champions; they were also fighting for a cash prize pot, divided between each category, kindly sponsored by RETIREMENT FUND SOLUTIONS.

The Mixed 4-a-side category saw 6 teams battle it out, in a round-robin format. It was very closely contested for silver and bronze medals with Net Violaters & Starshine Volleyball Academy taking 3 wins each and the match between the two teams decided the medal positions. Starshine VC won the match taking 2nd place, leaving Net Violaters in 3rd. The clear winner in the 4-a-side category was Wildcats, winning all their 5 matches without dropping a single set and becoming Retirement Fund Solutions Winter Classic 4-a-side mixed champions. Gespikkeldeminiatuurgroentekewers won the best team name at the tournament.

In the 2-a-side Youth Mixed competition, 4 teams played a round-robin format. The brother and sister combination of Lina & Julian Horenburg finished in 4th after fighting hard but not able to find a win. Nicole Stubenrauch & Sven secured the bronze medal by winning half of their matches. Shelli Starke & Lars Fischer won 3 out of 5 matches and finished in 2nd place. The title went to 11-year-old Marco Utz & his 14-year-old brother Andre Utz, who dominated the category, without losing a game, and taking the gold medal.

The 2-a-side Social competition, once again a round robin format was played with 5 teams.

Midway through the pool stages we unfortunately had an injury to Jeffrey Hass, and he was unable to continue, and he and his son Patrick had to withdraw. We at Timeout Beach Series 2018 and all the teams at the Retirement Fund Solutions Winter Classic wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the sand very soon.

The first semi-final saw Niklas Gerber & Nino Leicher beat Nikolai Pfeifer & Fabian Hass 2:0 and advance to the final. The second semi- final also only took 2 sets with Abiatar Andreas & Mutasa Kudakwashe beating Hencock & Smash.

3rd place went to Hencock & Smash with a consistent performance with a 2:1 win over Nikolai & Patrick. As the sun started to set the final was ready to take place. Right from the start it was a tight match but It took only 2 sets to separate the teams, with Abiatar & Mutasa beating Niklas & Nino winning 2:0, 21:14, 18:21 to finish top of the podium.

The Ladies category saw 5 teams playing through the day to find the best 2-a-side ladies team. The ladies played a round robin format with the top 2 teams playing a final. Rosi Hennes & Simone von Wietersheim won all 4 pool games and qualified as favourite in the final. It was much closer with the other 4 teams, and some close matches eventually saw Catherine Thomas & Hendrina Lindongo, Maike von Doorn & Lara Lüsse and Sonja Sieburg & Lara Fischer taking the other semi-final spots.

The first semi-final was comfortable won by Rosi & Simone 2:0 and advancing them to the final. The second semi-final was a much tighter match. Eventually Cathy & Hendrina winning in 3 sets to meet Rosi and Simone in the final.

In the 3rd / 4th place match Maike & Lara showed some great teamwork after the disappointment of losing the semi-final match and won the match 2:0 and took home the bronze medal.

In the final Rosi & Simone continued their dominance with a strong 2:0 win over Cathy & Hendrina and becoming the Retirement Fund Solutions Winter Classic Ladies Champions 2018. This is now Rosi & Simone’s second RFS Winter Classic tournament win in a row.

The Men’s category, 10 teams, split between 2 groups, played pool matches to determine the semi-finals. In group A, Steve Kangandjera & Panashe Chiguta winning all four pool matches to advance to the semi’s. The same pattern also happened in group B with Bernhard Schurz & Brandon de Jager also winning all 4 matches.

The first semi-final saw Luke & Jan-Eric out play Ishitile & Jefta, winning 2:1, 21:18, 16:21 & 15:9. The second semi saw a convincing win for Steve & Panashe over Bernhard & Brandon, 2:0, 21:14 & 21:13.

The bronze medal went to Bernhard & Brandon after a great performance over Ishitile & Jefta, winning the match 2:0, 21:18 & 21:19.

The much-anticipated Men’s Final took place in under the floodlights just after another beautiful sunset and in front of a large, noisy crowd. The first set was a tense, close affair, with both teams trading points. Eventually the Luke & Jan-Eric opened up a two-point lead, which they held to the end, winning 21:19.

The second set followed a similar pattern. Steve & Panashe tried everything, but weren’t able to get ahead on the score board and Luke & Jan-Eric finished of the second set and the match 2:0, 21:19 & 21:17 and becoming the Men’s Retirement Fund Solutions Winter Classic Championship 2018.

Timeout Beach Series 2018

The second Timeout Beach Series 2018 event of the year, the Interpack King & Queen of the Beach 2018, was hosted at DTS Beach Arena last weekend.

The King & Queen of the Beach concept for this tournament is to find the best individual beach volleyball athlete in the three 2-a-side categories; Men’s, Ladies. The athletes in their own categories are divided into groups of 4 athletes and will play one set matches with each of the other 3 athletes in their group (3 different partners). You not only have to play great beach volleyball to be successful, but you also have to be able to play with different partners that you might not be familiar with. This is a skill in itself and needs to be mastered to be able to succeed at this tournament.

This tournament wouldn’t be possible without the continued support from Red Bull Namibia and Interpack, who are supporting their three Timeout Beach Series 2018 event this year. We are humbled and very thankful by their support of beach volleyball in Namibia.

The Ladies competition saw some of the best beach volleyball athletes in Namibia battle it out for the title of ‘Queen of the Beach’. Including NVF Bank Windhoek NAM Open winner; Rosi Hennes and the Fabupharm Swakop Master 2017 winner Simone von Wietersheim, who were just a few of the top names that made up the field of 8 athletes.

The ladies played in 2 groups of 4 athletes, playing round robin format. The second round again saw 2 groups playing 3 one set matches, with the top two in each group going into the final and the bottom two, playing for places 5-8.

The final four comprised of Rosi Hennes, Dorle Verrinder, Simone von Wietersheim and Karin Curschmann. After a battle royal, Hennes managed to win all her 3 games with the other 3 athletes finishing on one win each and the silver and bronze podium places would be decided on points difference.

Verrinder and Curschmann finished with a record of 21:11, 11:21 & 12:21 (-9 points). They needed to play a game of Volis, first to 5 points, to decide who finished second and third. Verrinder won 5:0 and took second and Curschmann finish 3rd. The Queen of the Beach 2018 title went to Hennes with a very impressive winning record of 21:11, 21:11 & 21:12.

Queen of the Beach 2018

The Men’s category saw 24 athletes take part. It took three rounds of action to find our final four athletes with notable performances from two 17 year olds Stephanus Nambahu and Danilo von Ludwiger, to reaching their first final in the Men’s category.

In the final, the pattern of the day continued with 3 athletes all winning 1 out of 3 matches, with the silver and bronze medals being decided by point’s difference. Danilo von Ludwiger finished in bronze position with -4 points difference and Jan-Eric Sack finished with silver -2 points. But the clear winner was Conrad Johannes winning all his 3 games in the final (21:10, 21:11 & 21:18 and taking the title of King of the Beach.

King of the Beach 2018

In the 4-a-side category, 6 teams battled it out in a round-robin format to try and finish on the podium.

The pool stages saw one team dominate the competition, with Starshine Volleyball Academy won all of their 5 matches. The rest of the teams had to battle it out for 2nd, 3rd and the minor places.

After 15 games were played we saw Phoenix Two finish in 3rd place with a record of 3 wins. This left the Net Violaters to take 2nd place, winning 4 games and only losing to Starshine Volleyball Academy (2:0, 21:13, 21;18). A huge congratulation to Starshine Volleyball Academy, based in Soweto, Katarura, taking the title of 4-a-side Social Mixed King and Queen of the Beach 2017.
