Coaching Course @ DTS - Report by German coach Sven Gruel
The team of instructors for the 2nd part of the DNG (Deutsch-Namibische Gesellschaft e.V.) coaching course at DTS consisted of Namibian instructor Lydia Hatzenberg and German instructor Sven Gruel, using content of the FFWU. In total 8 coaches were part of the course, 5 DTS coaches and 3 national players of the Women‘s national team of Namibia!
Besides typical aspects of tactics, technique and athletics, the curriculum of FFWU also focuses on sustainable development goals as well as social and emotional skills as an useful addition for coaches working with youth players.
While the course was focused on theoretical and practical input of the curriculum by the instructors until the early afternoon, the training sessions starting afterwards were used to practically try out and implement the content before that. This meant that the content was not only spoken about, but also tried out hands-on, which ensured deeper understanding of the topics for the different age groups of the DTS teams.
The coaches were very interested and willing to learn during the long days of the course and have made great progress during the 3 weeks of the course. Judging by the numbers of admittance and enjoyment of the players of all age groups, it has been a success. Especially the aspects of what to train in which age group and how to deal with kids and adolescents in all developmental stages, really improved and helped the coaches to offer better training sessions.
For me as one of the two instructors, the course was a lot of fun and I have learned some things as well. I am very happy my colleague and I found a good way to incorporate the training sessions of the DTS coaches into the course structure. Although we had long days of over 10 hours, all the effort was worth it and the results could be observed on the pitch!
